On May 18, attendees of the 20th Annual Latino Conference in San Gabriel were introduced to the new Spanish-language materials at the Each Mind Matters table. SanaMente strategic council member Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola gave a presentation, during which he discussed the new SanaMente website and resources and how they are helping to raise awareness about mental health in the Spanish-speaking community. Among the attendees were mental health service providers, volunteers, advocates and community based organizations.
Senate Mental Health Champions
On May 23, Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 54, as introduced by Senator Jim Beall representing the 15th Senate District, which encompasses the South Bay and Silicon Valley, recognized May 2017 as National Mental Health Awareness Month in California to enhance public awareness of mental illness.
Mental Health Matters Day
Hundreds of mental health supporters and advocates gathered at the California State Capitol on May 24 for Mental Health Matters Day. The event was emceed by Paul Gilmartin, comedian and host of the Mental Illness Happy Hour podcast, and keynote speakers included actor Richard Dreyfuss, suicide attempt survivors and the creators of the documentary, “The S Word.” Attendees also saw a performance from Urban Beats, an artistic expression program for transition age youth.
